Gaining Competitive Advantage with Coaching Out of the Box®
This month at Coaching Out of the Box® we have been discussing competitive advantage, those attributes that allow an organization to outperform its competitors. It sounds great to have something that sets you apart, but you may be curious how to gain your competitive advantage.
Competitive advantage results from matching a unique ability that you or your organization acquires or develops, and that cannot be easily imitated, to the opportunities available to you. These core competencies give you the advantage, by creating and delivering value to your customers in your chosen field.
So how does all of this apply to coaching? Whether you are coaching others, a leader of an organization, or an individual looking to further your career, having the core competencies of coaching will give you a perspective by which to look at everything!
The core competencies of coaching include:
A. Setting the Foundation B. Co-creating the Relationship C. Communicating Effectively D. Facilitating Learning and Results
Coaching Out of the Box® offers many virtual courses or customized organization training's that will help you gain these core competencies and the competitive advantage you are looking for! Our courses also provide Approved Coach Specific Training Hours that you can apply toward your ICF Associate Certified Coach certification.
The biggest competitive advantage that you can invest in are those that work with you, for you, and YOURSELF. At Coaching Out of the Box® that is exactly what we help you do.

Definition of Passion: “a compelling enthusiasm or desire for something”
Passion is a big deal in coaching. Why? Because Coaching is a different kind of conversation designed to tap into one’s thoughts, ideas, concerns, enthusiasms, desires and challenges. Done right it harnesses the compelling enthusiasm or desire for something (passion) and supports it in becoming a reality.
Many people who add coaching skills to their toolkit, do so because they are passionate about making a difference in the lives of others.
Tips and Tools:
Realize exhaustion, disillusionment, delays, risk, sacrifice and lack of stability are part of the package when following one’s passion – this is where regularly scheduled coaching appointments come in.
Create a structure of accountability to move through those times with key commitments by specific dates – this is part of what makes a coaching conversation different , i.e. What are you committing to as a result of today’s conversation and by when. Let’s also confirm our next appointment.
As a coach, how do you support others in the journey of following their passion? The most important thing to do is to make sure that you are prepared for it. You need to make sure that you are both getting the support that you need and are up to the task of coaching others in either discovering, or in following, their passion. It is the coach’s ability, and responsibility, to stand with others, be the light in the storm as they move, step by step, in finding their way to their passion.
We, at Coaching Out of the Box®, want to make sure you are prepared to assist others, or pursue your own journey in passion, by offering some tools that can help. Alison Hendren, our CEO & Founder, has a personal favorite on this topic, Vital Signs – The Nature and Nurture of Passion by Gregg Levoy.
Check out our Linked In Group to hear what other coaches are saying on this topic and add your thoughts while you are there.
Also, Coaching Out of the Box® offers the Personal Groundwork for Coaching Program™that will help support those who are coaching others, but also helps those who are pursuing their passion, get their own house in order. You can find more information about this course HERE or start with our Personal Groundwork Assessment in the sidebar.

Many of them come in thinking that coaching is just something you are either good or bad at and that it’s a skill just naturally built within you, but they leave knowing that coaching is a leadership skill any individual can be successful at with some training and practice!
Here are some of the great coaching lessons these leaders and managers have learned from their time with us.
I used to think … it was more about the coach having all of the answers and sharing those answers with the learner.
But now I know … it is more about the learner having the answers and ideas for the future, and the coach providing assistance.
I used to think … it only applied to athletes or those who wanted life coaching.
But now I know … coaching is a useful tool for increasing engagement in many types of conversations, particularly at work, but also with family and friends.
I used to think … coaching was just telling people what to do.
But now I know … coaching empowers an employee to think for themselves and work on a solution based on their own ideas.
I used to think … coaching was used to discipline an employee.
But now I know … it is used as an exploratory tool to engage in conversations that address true feelings and issues, in an effort to explore solutions.
I used to think … it was simply guiding others to get things done.
But now I know … it is supporting people through listening, asking questions, and being curious, to help them to a place where they get what they need to resolve their concerns.
I used to think … of coaching more in terms of sports programs, or maybe performance management, not in terms of life skills.
But now I know … it can be used as part of a leadership style where I can engage others in the process of problem solving.
I used to think … coaching was very complex.
But now I know … it is empowering and supportive.
I used to think … it was providing information to others and then sending them off to do the job.
But now I know … coaching is utilizing active listening skills to allow the respondent to find out solutions for themselves, while asking open ended questions.
I used to think … it was just one of many tools used to solve a specific problem.
But now I know … it is a perspective by which to look at EVERYTHING!
“It’s very difficult to measure a return on investment for soft skills like coaching. We see a void in a solid way to do that within the field of coaching and these assessments are our attempt to address that void in the marketplace.”
– Bruce McLeod, Chief Culture Officer
Here’s how it’s done:
Organizations interested in implementing coaching can take the Coaching Readiness Assessment for Organizations. (Bruce’s tip: “Having someone highly aware of the culture of your organization (e.g.; Human Resource representative) will be able to provide the most accurate responses, but this assessment can be done by anyone aware of how the organization functions.”)
We send an immediate thumbnail sketch of where you’re at on the continuum of coaching readiness. Then we follow up with you to talk about how we can help you move further along.
Once we’ve set up your coaching program, we offer you the opportunity to utilize our Coaching Quotient™, which is a scorecard that we develop together to ensure it reflects the areas you want to see improved and areas we feel coaching can offer benefit.
These measurement tools are made especially for Coaching Out of the Box® clients and created by Coaching Out of the Box® leaders. So you know we’re designing and aligning these assessments with our teachings and practices and your desired areas of improvement in mind. We want to ensure you get the best results possible.
Almost every day we get great feedback on how coaching is strengthening the effectiveness of leaders, changing the way people do business, improving lives, while at the same time creating benefits for organizations.

A team of 10 trainers plus Coaching Out of the Box® Founder and CEO, Alison Hendren, and Brooke Simmons (Operations Manager with Coaching Out of the Box®), delivered our flagship The 5/5/5 Coaching Skills Training Program™ to 125 leaders from Saskatchewan Healthcare over two days in Saskatoon in March.
