Tackling Coaching Challenges

Challenges – we all have them. Some are minor hurdles while others seem like mountains that are nearly impossible to overcome. The good news about challenges is that they likely mean you are stretching yourself and learning and growing in the process.

image

How to Coach the Poor Communicator

Today I want to touch on one of those challenges that can seem like a mountain - a coachee who is a poor communicator. Coaching is all about communicating but what if you have a client or coachee who is just really bad at getting their thoughts out and points across? Or maybe the challenge is in HOW they deliver their message. For certain, it is difficult to coach someone who is a poor communicator. Additionally, poor communication skills impact one’s ability to do their job and can make relationships with managers, peers and employees difficult. These issues, in turn, impact a person’s ability to achieve their goals and perform at their peak. Other consequences of being a bad communicator include;

  • Misunderstandings
  • Inefficiency
  • Unengaged staff
  • Conflict

If you think about it, most interactions, whether in our work or personal lives, are dependent on how well we communicate with one another. So how do we tackle the challenge of coaching a poor communicator?

First, we need to identify the barriers getting in the way of good communication. Once we understand the reasons for poor communication, we need to break down the barriers and start building a path that will lead to clear, open, honest and productive communication.

This is one area where your questioning skills really come into play. Use your questioning skills to ask powerful coaching questions that will help you and your coachee identify the barriers that prevent them from communicating in a way that is heard and well received by their audience.

As you work through the process, look for clues to these 5 common barriers.

  • Filtering: A sender’s manipulation of the information to make it more favorable to the receiver. Sugar-coating a message or omitting important details.
  • Selective Perception: Inability to receive the intended message when they interpret what they hear based on an over-reliance on their interests, background, experience and attitudes.
  • Information Overload: Inability to send clear messages or take in new information due to overload and distractions.
  • Defensiveness: When a message is interpreted as threatening, defenses go up and communication is thwarted.
  • Language: With increasing diversity in our workplace, language can become a barrier when words mean different things to different people.

Your success in this process will be based on your ability to not only ask excellent questions, but to ask them in a manner that is open, unattached and judgment-free. Asking not only the appropriate question, but in the appropriate way, is very important to the learning, living and communications process. Questions can offer new perspectives and stimulate answers and possibilities. They can also push buttons, express judgments and make assumptions!

I hope by now you know that I am passionate about the power of coaching and about helping you be successful. We have several resources specifically related to communication available to support you. If you haven’t already done so, you’ll want to take advantage of the following;

5/5/5 Coaching Skills Training Program™

One last comment on this topic. I had the privilege to present to Harvard Medical School, Institute of Coaching the results that an organization achieved after adopting our 5/5/5 Coaching Skills Training Program™. One of the key findings was Improved Communication. Given that communication is one of the key challenges in most organizations, this result was especially important. See the full list of results achieved here.

Educational Webinars

We will kick off our 2018 webinar series with the popular topic of Certification. If you haven’t considered certification in the past, now may be a good time to take a closer look. The coaching industry is becoming more and more competitive and many clients expect their coach to be certified. Questions we will answer during this webinar include;

  • Do I need certification?
  • What are the requirements?
  • How long will it take to obtain certification?
  • How much will it cost?
  • What courses do I need to take?
  • Do previous courses, training, on the job coaching apply to the required hours?
  • How do I get the most out of my certification?

In this free webinar we will answer these questions and much more. We will also focus on the big picture of certification – what are the benefits and who will benefit most from certification.

Our coaching guides continue to be very popular and we will be adding to these in 2018. If you haven’t taken advantage of these free resources, you can find them here.

One resource that we have developed is the Personal Groundwork for Coaching Assessment. If you aren’t already using this tool or it’s been awhile since you last took the assessment, I urge you to give it a look. This assessment tool has been carefully crafted to support the discovery process; to help you get to the root of blocks, prioritize areas to focus on first and develop a plan to tackle the issues. If you are currently a coach, take the assessment yourself first and then provide it to your coachees. A great tool to kick off the new year.

Coaching Programs for Organizations

Why Coaching is Catching On?

image

While I may be one of the most passionate advocates of coaching, I am not alone. The coaching industry is exploding (over 50,000 practitioners and $1 billion) as more and more people experience the power of coaching to transform individuals, teams and organizations.

The old ways of managing and leading are not effective in today’s environment. Everyday people are turning to coaching as a new way to lead and manage. And they are getting powerful results. Why do coaching skills work so well in this new environment? Here are a few of the key reasons.

  • Results. Organizations that have implemented a coaching culture are seeing results in improved employee engagement, communication effectiveness and improvements to the bottom line.

  • The new work environment requires new leadership skills. There has been a tremendous shift from routine, repetitive measurable work, to work that involves critical thinking, analysis and creativity. The old carrot and stick approach to leadership no longer works and can even have devastating results in today's organization.

  • Adaptability and sustainability. The new work environment requires a way to lead that will produce positive and sustainable results; a leadership approach that is continuously adaptable to internal and external change.

Are you looking for new ways to lead and manage? Do you feel stuck in your career? Team dynamics got you down? If you haven’t already joined the coaching movement I have a special offer. We are holding a special virtual Using Coaching to Lead™ class.

Using Coaching to Lead™ is a 2-part class that provides an overview and introduction to coaching. This is a hands-on class where you will learn what coaching is, how it is being used to transform the work environment and two coaching skills you can start utilizing immediately.

Find out what all the excitement is about and how you can benefit from the power of coaching. The class is offered as two 90-minute virtual sessions for a total of 3 hours of focused learning. We are offering this at a special introductory price of $29 – a $229 value. Spend just 3 hours to learn first-hand how coaching can help you take your career, team and organization to the next level.

Who should attend

The class is designed for those thinking of becoming a coach and those interested in bringing coaching to their organization. If you think coaching may be right for you and / or your organization but you still have questions or would like to learn more before making a bigger commitment, this class is for you.

What you will learn

Topics covered in this class include;

  • An exploration of what coaching is and is not
  • Definition of coaching
  • Understanding the distinction between mentoring, managing and coaching
  • The impact that coaching has on individuals, teams and organizations
  • Overview and live demonstration of two key coaching skills: Listening and Questioning
  • AND you will walk away with your action plan
  • Our Using Coaching to Lead™ Workbook will be provided to all participants electronically

If you are interested in becoming a better communicator, leader or manager, register for our Using Coaching to Lead™ class today.

Sharpen Your Listening and Questioning Skills

image

Questioning and listening skills are a cornerstone of coaching excellence. We all know how to ask questions and to listen but there is real skill to doing this effectively when coaching. Questions can be educators, catalysts, weapons, tools and much, much more. From a coaching perspective, it is helpful to think of questions as, “the seeking of information for clarity, insight and learning”. I think you will agree that any profession that is focused on communication and competency must pay close attention to questions.

Just as we have all learned, there are no dumb questions, there are also no bad questions. However, there are ways to turn a good question into a great question by paying attention to the phrasing, timing and framework. Questioning skill involves not only the ability to ask excellent questions, but also to ask them in a manner that is open, unattached and judgment-free.

Coaches need to learn how to ask insightful questions that will elicit revealing responses and then listen to the coachee. The goal is to guide the coachee through the self-discovery process. While some coaches can prepare their next question on the fly, it can be helpful to have a battery of questions covering different categories prepared and ready to pull from your toolkit.

It is not enough to ask insightful and clarifying questions. A coach must also have excellent listening skills. This one can be challenging for many of us. This takes focus, genuine interest in what our coachee has to say and discernment to ‘hear’ what they are really saying. You might think of this as mindful listening. This type of listeningcreates the ability to establish relationships and build bonds with others. One of the biggest mistakes people make in conversation is to focus on their own responses to what is being said. As a result, they end up missing portions of what the other person is saying. This habit can be hard to break but well worth practicing in order to improve listening skills. A common listening tool, and one that can help you keep the focus on your coachee, is to immediately restate what they have said to ensure that you ‘heard’ them correctly.

There is much to be learned and mastered when it comes to questioning and listeningskills. We will dive into this topic in our next webinar with live coaching demos. Be sure to register for this lively and educational webinar.

As a reminder, we also offer the 365 Coaching Questions booklet. This is a resource to help you develop your questioning skills. These 365 questions are jumping off points or catalysts for you. Categorized by topic, most of the questions may be adapted to fit different situations. We invite you to integrate them into your own voice and try out different questions in different situations. If you already have a copy, pull it out during the webinar and make notes. Don’t have a copy? Get your copy here.

Webinar: Sharpen Your Questioning and Listening Skills

In this webinar, we will discuss different types of questions plus plenty of examples and tips for better listening. We will present real live situations and have real coaches utilize their questioning and listening skills. After each demo there will be a feedback session – to highlight what worked and what they might have done differently.

Topics we will cover include;

  • Importance and impact of questioning and listening skills
  • Question type, tone, manner of delivery
  • Understanding the objectives of your questions
  • Tips for developing excellent listening skills
  • Demonstration of questioning and listening skills
  • Plenty of time for Q and A
